Abstract

This study examines leadership contestation among pesantren leaders in Lombok and its impact on Islamic education transformation within Nahdlatul Wathan institutions. Senior leaders rely on charisma and tradition, while younger leaders emphasize academic excellence, digital integration, and modern administration. Findings show that leadership contestation influences institutional development and student outcomes. Pesantren that combine Islamic teachings with modern education produce well-rounded graduates, while those resistant to change risk losing relevance. Challenges include balancing traditional and modern curricula, succession planning, financial sustainability, and government regulations. Technology and entrepreneurship are becoming crucial in pesantren leadership. Younger leaders pioneer digital learning and economic sustainability initiatives, enhancing competitiveness. Despite competition, collaboration among pesantren leaders through training programs and knowledge-sharing strengthens Islamic education. The study concludes that balancing tradition and innovation is key to the future of Islamic education in Lombok. Visionary leadership, adaptability, and collaboration will ensure pesantren remain centers of excellence in both religious and modern education.
